What scientists can learn about the brain is often limited by the tools they have at their disposal. New and improved tools could make previously impossible experiments possible, revealing new insights about the brain. Neuroscientist Spencer Smith of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill is hoping to make that a reality. Backed by a U.S. BRAIN Initiative grant from the National Science Foundation, Smith leads the NEMONIC (Next generation MultiphOton NeuroImaging Consortium) project, which aims to develop state-of-the-art imaging tools and make them available to the neuroscience community.
