Just as we can point to outward signs of aging — like wrinkles or graying hair — scientists are learning about the signs of aging in the brain. Neurons retract and some brain regions can shrink. Overall brain volume starts declining as early as our 30s and 40s. But, just like sagging skin, many of these changes are not detrimental. By studying the aging brain, scientists are learning why and how the brain changes and identifying ways to help adults keep their minds healthy and active.
