Musician and researcher Charles Limb wondered how the brain works during musical improvisation — so he put jazz musicians and rappers in an fMRI to find out. What he and his team found has deep implications for our understanding of creativity of all kinds.

Charles Limb is an associate professor in the Johns Hopkins Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, where he specializes in neurotology and skull base surgery. He is also a faculty member at the Peabody Conservatory of Music and School of Education of Johns Hopkins University.
